Jenn and Russ didn’t exchange another word until dinner the next night. The three of them sat around a half-eaten rotisserie chicken, green beans, and mashed potatoes. Usually a lively affair, dinner had become a moping session where each of them just stared at their food, gulped it down as quickly as possible, and wallowed in self-pity or anger, depending on the day. That day, pity was on the menu. Scoobie was the only one talking, as he begged for food and occasionally got a random bite from Cooper’s sloppiness.

The doorbell rang in the foyer. Scoobie burst forth from underneath the table, the squeak of a puppy bark echoing off the tile as he surged to the front door.

Jenn frowned. “Who can that be?” she asked no one in particular. And then she remembered. “Oh, crap.”

Cooper gasped. “Don’t say crap, Mom.” He gasped again. “Crap. I said, ‘crap.’”

Russ laughed. “Just stop talking, bud. Okay?”

Cooper covered his mouth and nodded.

Jenn headed to the front door, the bell ringing again en route.

“Who is it?” Russ called out.

Jenn peeked through the frosted glass. It was Joe. Ah, shit. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to see him, but she didn’t feel like dealing with Russ.

“It’s for me,” she called back.

She opened the door and put her index finger to her lips, shushing Joe. He frowned, but kept quiet as he entered. Jenn ushered him upstairs without a word.

Once they were upstairs, she said, “Sorry about that. Long story.”

“Okay. Don’t worry about it.”

“So, what’s the surprise? Waiting for this has been the highlight of my day.”

“Me, too,” Joe said as a pinkish hue materialized onto his cheeks before he turned away to the corner of the room. He squatted down in the corner and tugged at the carpet. “It occurred to me that this house was done by Michael Valderrama. Check this out.”

Jenn stood behind Joe, peeking over his shoulder. He tugged at the carpet. It separated from the tack strip with a rip and a pop, and then a foot or so of the carpet flopped over in Joe’s hands.

Scoobie bounced into the room, quickly finding the newcomer and jumping onto Joe’s knee, then leaping to his ear, tongue at the ready.

“Scoobie, down!” Jenn said.

Joe pulled the carpet and then flinched from Scoobie’s surprise. The carpet slipped from Joe’s hands, his momentum pulling him back, and he tumbled toward Jenn. She thrust her heels away from Joe to avoid the contact, which threw off her center of balance. She fell forward as Joe crashed onto his back. Jenn landed on top of Joe, her head smacking the carpeted floor with a thud between Joe’s thighs. It was a fully-clothed and less-than-pleasurable sixty-niner. And the wrong head was throbbing.

Dazed, Jenn looked up to see Cooper’s superman slippers and Russ’s hairy feet standing in the doorway.

“What the fu—” Russ said, but then caught himself, glancing at Cooper. “What the hell is going on?”

“You guys curse more than the back of the bus these days,” Cooper said.
